Online Essentials is a monthlycolumn where we introduce you to an influential digital content creator in their own words.
If you’re embarrassed by old Facebook photos, imagine having seven years of YouTube videos from the age of 14. It’s just a fact of life for rising actress Arden Rose, star of New Form’s “Mr. Student Body President” and the second season of AwesomenessTV’s “Guidance.”
Rose began her YouTube channel in 2009 with hair and make-up videos, counseling her peers on curing acne and how to grow hair more quickly. Over the pastseven years, hervideos have quickly evolved from the ubiquitoustalking head tutorial video to more stylized fare; withediting, music choices, and feminist politics, Rose’s channel stands out in a sea of clickbait titles and the viral challenge of the moment.

Young people looking to Rose as a role model are in good hands.

Who rocked the mannequin challenge hardest?
Lauren Giraldo. I mean, a ton of people made amazing videos, but she posed like someone was dragging her by the hair at a busy house party. Into the detail.

Kill, Shag, or Marry: Instagram, Twitter, or YouTube?
Kill YouTube, shag Instagram, marry Twitter.
Who are your favorite feminists on Instagram?
That’s What She Saidand Lenny Letter. The first is an honest look at the real concerns of young girls trying to find themselves in a anti-feminist world, and the latter is like an older sister that has her sh*t together, but is still actively working towards dismantling the patriarchy. Good stuff all around.
Best meme account?
sh*theadsteve on Instagram is my favorite account hands down.
What celebrity would you want to run your Twitter account for a day?
Cher. DUH.
Which up and coming YouTuber are you most excited about?
