What is the future of prop trading? ›

The prop trading space is relatively new—no more than 10 years old—but growing fast. It was estimated at $6.7 billion globally in 2020 and is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.2% from 2021 to 2028. Like any financial strategy, it offers significant opportunities as well as risks.

The origins of prop trading firms were in the 'golden era' of prop trading during the 1980s. The financial markets were becoming deregulated as the U.S. lifted the Glass-Steagall Act's restrictions. This allowed central banks and other large institutions to explore riskier activities.

Proprietary trading can create potential conflicts of interest such as insider trading and front running. Proprietary traders may use a variety of strategies such as index arbitrage, statistical arbitrage, merger arbitrage, fundamental analysis, volatility arbitrage, or global macro trading, much like a hedge fund.

In recent months, several prominent proprietary trading firms have gone out of business. This wave of closures began when regulatory authorities in the US and Canada froze My Forex Funds, a major player in the industry.

It is against JPMS policy to engage in proprietary trading activity that JPMS believes would be prohibited under the Volcker Rule (Section 13 of the Bank Holding Company Act of 1956 and the associated rules and regulations).
