Listed my parents' dining room table for them the other day. I immediately had people wanting to buy it for asking price and asking me for my Venmo or Zelle info. 1 person lives in Illinois and the other in some country I've never even heard of. I don't list a lot of stuff - this is maybe the 5th item I've ever tried selling, and it seems that the first day is just scammers - like almost instantly. I eventually sold everything I listed to legit people, but cutting through the initial scammer bull$hit really sucks.

It has been a few years since I listed stuff but never once encountered what you are describing. Sounds like things have changed alot.

I've gave away a few things recently and it sucked combing through all the scammers. They all had Hispanic names and I did end up giving everything to Hispanic people so they weren't all scammers but 90% of them were.

Yeah I think it has changed a lot. I don’t Facebook but my wife does and FB Marketplace used to be the stress-free, non scammer option for selling crap. Not anymore. Amazing legit people can get kicked off FB and scammers are everywhere.

Just list as cash only and local pickup only. Completely eliminates all that *****.

Just curious, how were they going to scam you if you’re giving stuff away? I don’t see how you could lose more than what you’re already giving away, but maybe I’m missing something.

I think they're bots that hit anything on Marketplace regardless of price.

We sell stuff on Market Place and still use CL. We tell people this is a cash in hand transaction. NO Venmo etc.! Also very careful about the out of state mixed bag people. Most times you can tell who is bad or good.

I've had good luck on both ends. When you list something there are always 3-5 people who express interest right away; They are bots, ignore them. Never take conversations off the app. Also when selling make sure to specify local pickup only, don't take your stuff to someone else's house or have it shipped somewhere, at least not without prior payment. For in-person transactions insist on payment on site or the deal is off. Expect that some people might flake or say "oh, I thought I had (agreed amount) on me but I only have (agreed amount minus 50%)." Cash preferred but I've done a couple Venmo sales and haven't had a problem with getting scammed; If both people are there it's easier to address any funny business.

If buying, inspect the item, if it's electronic ask the seller to turn it on and off and perform basic functions, but buyer always beware.

Most of this stuff should be given but a lot of people aren't smart.

Another good sign that they're a scammer is when you look up their profile, it says that they joined in 2023.

Selling online has always been risky. I knew a woman who was murdered 20 years ago by someone who was buying her pool table she listed on Craigslist.

I bought this online today but went and checked it out to reconfirm some things mentioned before buying it. Great down filled fiber cushions seat and back. Super nice quality leather. Leather looks and feels like a quality goat skin leather. Feels like a really nice slightly broken in quality leather jacket. Will be using it for room for audio entertainment etc.

I quit using Facebook many years ago, but my wife has it mainly to keep in touch with friends and extended family in KS since we live in VA.

She did a few sales of baby stuff we no longer needed as our son grew out of them, but got so sick of the bots and scammers and flakes that anymore she just does the “buy nothing” feature where you take a photo, describe the item and condition accurately (it’s free so no need to sugarcoat anything) and request local pickup only.

She’s now grown weary of that because multiple people will beg for whatever she lists (white noise machine, pack and play, toys) and she’ll use the randomizer to be “fair” on who gets picked, she’ll notify the winner, then they’ll either stop responding or they’ll never show up to get the item after multiple reschedules.

Luckily our neighborhood has lots of amateur craftsmen/handyman types who will fix damaged furniture or electronics, as well as families with small children who want baby stuff, so most of the time we can just set sh*t on the curb and it’s gone in a few hours.

Plus, there’s a charity nearby that needs stuff constantly, so we also take a lot over to them but there’s certain things they can’t accept, so those go to the curb or occasionally “buy nothing”.
