If Rockstar Takes Another Shot at Red Dead Online, It Can’t Miss (2024)

Highlights

  • A Red Dead Redemption 2 sequel needs to focus on Red Dead Online with regular updates and a balanced economy.
  • Red Dead Online issues include lack of updates, hackers, and server problems; undermined by GTA Online priorities.
  • Rockstar should learn from Red Dead Online's mistakes and focus on expanding new features to reach GTA Online levels.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the highest-rated games of its generation, and for good reason. Its stellar storytelling of American Industrialization engulfing the West is unparalleled, and its realistic gameplay allows for hours upon hours of fun. The game also has an online counterpart, and though it has a lot of potential, it isn't as celebrated.

If Rockstar does develop a Red Dead Redemption 2 sequel and takes another shot at Red Dead Online, it shouldn't drop the ball again. This can be done if enough attention is paid to the online mode to ensure its economy is balanced, and it is not treated as a second-class project behind Grand Theft Auto Online.

The Problems with Red Dead Online

Red Dead Online isn't a terrible game, but there are a few things Rockstar got wrong that turned gamers against it. Perhaps the biggest problem is the lack of updates the game received. Though there were a few major updates, such as the Blood Money expansion, it wasn't nearly enough to keep gamers hooked.

The game was also sullied by hackers and griefers who were out to ruin everyone else's fun. This is a problem that's not unique to RDO, as GTA Online has dealt with hackers and griefers as well. Additionally, there were occasional Red Dead Online server issues that prevented people from playing at all, which infuriated some.

Is Grand Theft Auto Online to Blame?

Many theorize that the problems faced by RDO are due to Rockstar focusing more on GTA Online which has a larger player base and generates more problems. Consequently, GTA Online received more updates and content while RDO was left in its shadow. This is a mistake that Rockstar shouldn't repeat with a future RDO game.

Rockstar Should Give Red Dead Online Another Shot

There were good aspects of Red Dead Online that could have been expanded upon, such as new RDO clothes and the ability to play as a posse with other players. The game could have been made better by doubling down on the features of the single-player game and providing more regular content and updates.

It's too late for the current rendition of Red Dead Online, as Rockstar has shifted its attention to the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto franchise. To mark the beginning of RDO going into life support mode, players held a Red Dead funeral event in-game where some players visited the mountains a final time or just enjoyed a beer in Valentine.

When Will the Next Red Dead Online Game be Released?

It'll likely be a long time before players get another Red Dead Online, since Rockstar is currently hard at work developing Grand Theft Auto 6. Furthermore, Red Dead Redemption 2's development took over 8 years, so it doesn't look like a new RDR game will come around in the next few years.

Red Dead Online is not hated by all, and some players enjoyed what Rockstar provided, judging by its active player base. Nevertheless, it failed to reach the heights of titles like Grand Theft Auto Online. With the next Red Dead Online, Rockstar shouldn't repeat the same mistakes.

Red Dead Online

Red Dead Online is a "standalone" release that takes place in the Red Dead Redemption II world, allowing players to create their own heroes and outlaws. They can enter an open world with other players, adventuring through a veritable playground of wild west-inspired areas. There's PvP, cooperative play, multiple unlockables, and much more.
