Namibia's Meatco Embarks on a Landmark Journey: Unlocking Africa's Potential
Namibia's meat industry is about to make history! Meat Corporation of Namibia (Meatco) is gearing up for a groundbreaking venture, marking its first-ever export under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement. This move is set to revolutionize the leather market, starting with a significant shipment to Kenya.
But here's the exciting part: on Thursday, two fully-packed containers of Wet Blue Hides will embark on a journey from Meatco's Okapuka Tannery, located 25km north of Windhoek, all the way to Mombasa, Kenya. This is a historic moment, as it's the first export under the AfCFTA charter.
And this is where it gets even more intriguing: Meatco has secured a Kenyan client who will transform these hides into finished leather, initially on a trial basis. This arrangement includes a quality check and trading under AfCFTA's non-tariff provisions, ensuring a smooth process.
The trade protocols require a full disclosure of the hides' origin, aligning with the Certificate of Origin requirements. The shipment will depart from the Port of Walvis Bay, marking a significant step in intra-African trade.
Okapuka Tannery, a pillar of Meatco's operations, has been running since 1987 with an advanced automated process. This technology minimizes human intervention, efficiently converting fresh and salted hides into wet-blue leather.

The African Continental Free Trade Agreement is a game-changer, with 43 parties and 11 signatories, making it the largest free-trade area by member states after the World Trade Organisation, and the biggest in terms of population and geographic size, covering 1.3 billion people across Africa.
Aochamub acknowledges the challenges, especially in logistics, but remains positive. He says, 'This is a step towards our intercontinental trade goals and expanding the leather value chain within Africa. With Africa's abundant natural resources, increased trade will bring prosperity to all participating nations.'
