Really insightful article about what has worked in Houston in coordinating services to address the needs of their homeless residents. Also interesting to see their reliance on federal funding and what this might lead to through the upcoming 'fiscal cliff'. This article gave me a lot of insight into models Washoe County is working to adopt in collaboration with government and nonprofit partners to coordinate efforts. Warning -- long article, so schedule time to read it leisurely!

I began my career working in local homeless shelters. Over the years through that work, I met many people, all with unique stories and backgrounds. No one person was the same as another and while they have might have had commonalities that enabled homelessness, they were each unique individuals. In our work as fundraisers and storytellers, we have an opportunity to empower those whose stories we are telling. And while bottoms lines are important, we have a greater responsibility at hand. Our objective should not be focused purely on crafting compelling narratives—but also doing so with honesty, respect, and empathy. Ethical storytelling is about honoring the dignity, diversity, and lived experiences of the individuals and communities whose stories we share. It's about being transparent, avoiding sensationalism, and ensuring that our storytelling reflects the truth, even when it's uncomfortable. This type of storytelling is not just a moral imperative—it's also essential for building trust, credibility, and long-term relationships with our audiences-- at time when trust in nonprofits is dwindling. When we tell stories ethically, we build bridges of understanding and empathy, rather than perpetuating stereotypes or exploiting vulnerability. We empower those whose stories we share to be seen, heard, and valued as the full, complex human beings they are.

Homelessness is complex, and partnership matters! Bylaw enforcement and outreach teams working together create a balanced approach. Enforcement ensures safety and compliance, while outreach offers support and connection to services. Synergy of expertise, human-centered approach, coordination, and holistic support are the benefits. Let's champion the power of partnership for a compassionate and compliant solution. Together, we can make a positive impact on homelessness. 🤝💙 #PartnershipMatters #HomelessnessSolutions

💥 Our next Grapevine Speaker's Series is happening on April 4! 💥It’s estimated that 6 million people experience homelessness in the U.S. each year and one out of every two Americans is one paycheck away from not being able to afford rent. We also know that 82% of Americans believe the U.S. should be doing more to prevent homelessness. So what’s preventing us from addressing this issue in a real and effective way?💬 This conversation will outline how and why community-based work and advocacy is at the heart of addressing the homelessness crisis. The scope of the problem can feel daunting, but community-centric models like Giving Circles bring reason for hope by prioritizing our shared humanity and desire for collective change.🎟 Grab your spot to the conversation on April 4 here: https://lnkd.in/eibBwA5u🎤 Meet the Panelists:🌟 Kevin F. Platform13 new campaign, Homelessness Is…. for House of St Barnabas launches today. The job: Find a way to change public understanding and raise awareness around Homelessness being more than rough sleeping with a focus on unsuitable housing - a big and live issue in London. We kept it simple, telling the real life stories of those who have lived in unsuitable accommodation - Harvey, Sanchia, Kwajo, Tanaka, Thomas and Blossom 🏆We are proud to have fully concepted and produced this campaign - delivering key messaging and storytelling, comms strategy, creative and multichannel production across OOH, digital and social. There was only one person for the job to capture heroing portraits of this inspiring group - Tom Oldham beautifully supported by James Hole and a massive thank you to Ella for video shooting and bringing the stories together. Other key partners in the campaign are FleishmanHillard bringing the comms strategy to life through PR, JCDecaux UK providing a 55-site media buy across the capital and Adot / Outernet London donating space from today til Fri, 6 Oct on their wrap-around screens at the entrance of Tottenham Court Rd Station.Send us shots if you see it anywhere and make sure to tag The House of St Barnabas and #homelessnessis and us (if you like 💚)It’s been a pleasure to work alongside Gillian Jackson and the House of St. Barnabas team Ellena Bianchi-Barry Tijani Barker on such an important project. Many of us simply don’t realise that homelessness has many forms outside of rough sleeping and is often hiding in plain sight. We hope this campaign can both drive awareness around this issue, inspire people who may be in these situations and start some meaningful conversations around realistic solutions.Discover more https://lnkd.in/eY9CzR-K 🔋#platform13_ #houseofstbarnabas #homelessnessis

I spent my Christmas Eve feeding, clothing and talking to the homeless people in my community and this is what I learnt.1. Resilience - Witnessing the resilience of the homeless community in London taught me that strength can be found even in challenging circ*mstances.2. Human Connection - Spending time talking with homeless individuals highlighted the importance of human connection and the shared experiences that connect us all.3. Gratitude - Engaging with the homeless population instilled a deep sense of gratitude for the privileges and comforts often taken for granted in everyday life.4. Diverse Stories - Each person I met had a unique story, dispelling stereotypes and emphasizing the diversity within the homeless community, fostering empathy and understanding.5. Community Support - Recognizing the impact of community support services underscored the significance of collaborative efforts in addressing homelessness and providing essential resources.
