Restaurants in Gettysburg PA and Harpers Ferry WV?
We will be in Gettysburg and Harpers Ferry for July 4th weekend. Would like any suggestions for restaurants with a view or that are unique in some way. Thanks all information appreciated!

Hi CD!
We love the Dobbin House Tavern in Gettysburg and have had both a lunch and a dinner there on different trips. Its an authentic Tavern, circa 1776 and the food is usually good IMO. Think Chownings Tavern in Williamsburg.
Check out their underground railroad room, which you can see even if you don't eat there.
Just visited Harpers Ferry last year and left before lunch...as there appeared to be many smallish mom and pop places in the historic area but none that caught my eye...
This will top your post and maybe others can help.

We ate at the Gingerbread Man when we went to Gettysburg. Great food, great prices and (surprise) the best homemade gingerbread I have ever had.
Nearby is the building where the brought General Reynolds body after he was shot. We saw it on a ghost show right before we went and just happened to pass it on the way to the restaurant.

Purcellville, VA, is not too far from Harpers Ferry (about 30 mins) and is worthy of a visit. We love Magnolias at the Mill (which is located inside an actual mill so it's quite beautiful/unusual inside). If you do decide to eat there, you can make reservations via Open Table. You should also request to sit in the main mill room, otherwise you might get stuck in the back porch area which is nothing special to look at.

The Dobbins House is the best but without a view. Don't miss Ellen's Underground Railroad suggestion! If the crowd is overwhelming there is a local restaurant in Thurmont, MD that Pres. Clinton used to visit with a good reputation.Maybe a MD Post could offer the name.

Thanks everyone, I have printed this and will take with us.
Ellen:
Is it best to stay in Gettysburg and just do a day trip to Harpers Ferry?
Beanweb: Tell me why you like Purcellville, Is it a place you would spend the night instead of Harpers Ferry?
Thanks all!

I live about 25 mi from Purcellville but really have only been there for meals. It's tiny, but both Magnolia's and Candelora (which is a B&B with a fantastic italian restaurant) offer great dining. I wouldn't necessarily stay in Purcellville over Harpers Ferry - I'm not even sure where I would stay in Purcellville if I needed to spend a night there! It's just in a beautiful area that's very conveniently located to other areas I also enjoy like Leesburg, Middleburg, and Waterford. Additionally, there are some decent vineyards in the area. Breaux Vineyards is my favorite so far, with a setting that almost feels like a European vineyard.
I've briefly walked through Harpers Ferry and would probably stay there over Purcellville, but if you have extra time definitely explore the area a bit.
I just found this link that mentions several things to do in the area that you'll be in (around WV/VA Loudoun County)...it might be useful for your trip planning.

Hi CD, it depends where you may be coming from, or going afterwards. I was personally unimpressed with Harpers Ferry, and found it lacking in the charm and finesse, and even sparkle of other restored towns such as williamsburg or greenfield village. JMO but i'm still surprised its a nat'l historic park! Maybe it was an off day.... but i don't think so.
So i definitely wouldn't stay there, altho there are likely many other little towns / villages nearby that would have lodging if you're on your way to or from somewhere else.
You can 'do' gettysburg in two days MAX altho its really a fun place to stay in terms of lodging, restaurants, shopping etc.
Hope that helps.

Susie
The mineral waters of Berkeley Springs sounds inviting.
Ellen: Thanks for the info. My expectations now will not be that high so I won't be disapointed. I did make reservations in Harpers Ferry for one night at the Jackson Rose B&B. It's on the National Register of Historic places and served as "Stonewall" Jackson's temporary headquarters during the Civil War. It's also where the 'Jackson Rose' got its name. I hope we like our time there.

Hilltop Hotel in Harpers Ferry has a nice view and rustic worn atmosphere- the Yellow brick Bank in Shepardstown used to be good
Magnolias in Pville is good- no place to stay in Pville but excellent BandBs- check out Oaklandgreen.com
I love Harpers Ferry and take people there all the time- to compare it to Williamsburg is unfair. HF still has a population and the surrounding area has a lot to offer for people who like to avoid the tour bus crowds-
