THE BAD NEWS: We're hours away from our fundraising deadline, and we're still short. We need to raise $124,000 by midnight to continue to protect redwoods from climate change, habitat destruction, and encroaching development. THE GOOD NEWS: Every dollar donated will be matched by a generous donor, ensuring even greater protection for the redwoods. Act now if you want your donation doubled before tonight's deadline. Together, let's cultivate a future where redwood forests flourish for generations to come.Donate here: https://bit.ly/4bFzjZN

At Sempervirens Fund, we want to practice what we preach. We spend a lot of time telling our followers and supporters to go outside, sharing the great benefits of being in the forest and in nature; it's critical that our staff have the time to do that, too.🌲Our offices are closed from July 1–5 so the SVF team can practice self-care, go hiking, read, dance, create space for creativity—whatever brings rest and restoration.🌲We hope you find rest this week, too.

This is a Red Rayed Hulsea (Hulsea heterochroma), a fire following plant, that we spotted at the San Vicente Redwoods trailhead. This beauty was first seen in the spring of 2020 after a 22-acre prescribed burn. That was the first time it was documented in Santa Cruz County. Over the last few years, we have worked with Land Trust of Santa Cruz County and Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) to scatter seeds in the area; we believe this is the first one to grow from those seeds.

"Nearly as ancient as redwoods—with fossil records dating back nearly to the dinosaurs—a 15-million year old sea floor emerges amongst the giants. Its Zayante soil, comprised of about 92% sand, can’t hold onto much nutrients or water. But these hot, dry pockets—starkly contrasting with their wet, dark redwood forest neighbors—support numerous species adapted to their extreme conditions, some of which aren't found anywhere else. The unfortunate similarity of sandhills and redwood habitats is that human impacts and climate change are leading to their decline. And like so many other things in the natural world, we are losing species faster than we can study them." ▶️ ▶️ Learn more about the *very* rare Santa Cruz sandhills in our new photo essay featuring gorgeous photographs by Orenda Randuch: https://lnkd.in/gdhEKUGT
